The harmful effect caused by UV could actually be overcome by
sunscreen. Sunscreen functioned to absorb UV and to protect human skin from
UV radiation. One of active substances that could protect human body tissue
damaged by free radical of UV radiation was sub-substance of Benzophenone. 2-
benzoil benzoat acid was a benzophenone substance so it was expected to have
ability as sunscreen which could be formulated in a form of cream. The objective
of this research was to find out the physical characteristic of 2-benzoil benzoate
acid sunscreen as well as to find out its effectiveness which was represented inSun
Protection Factor (SPF) grade. 2-benzoyl benzoat acid had 2.67 SPF grade. The
cream formulation was made in 3 concentrations that were concentration 5, 6, and
7%. The test on its physical characteristic showed that the cream that was made
had good physical characteristic in organoleptic, homogeneity, stability, pH,
viscosity, spread capacity, and its stickiness test because it fulfilled the required
range grade. The result on SPF test for concentration 5, 6, and 7% were presented
in order as follow 0.32; 0.61; 0.86. It means that they did not have protection
ability as sunscreen.
