Abstract

A research has been conducted to determine the effect of Carboxymethyl
Cellulose (CMC) on the process of crosslinking and to analyze the properties of
crosslinked hydrogel film for wound dressing application. The composition of
Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) concentration was 0% to 20% (by weight) and
irradiated with electron beam. The measured characteristics included gel
fraction, water vapor transmission rate and mechanical properties. The chemical
and morphology structur were analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared
Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The research
result showed that the hydrogel crosslinking value increased with the addition of
CMC as indicated by gel fraction value of PEO-CMC hydrogel which increased
significantly at 5% concentration and tended to be stable at concentrations of
10%, 15% and 20%. The swelling ratio value increased at concentrations of 10%,
15% and 20% with an optimum value of 714% at 15% CMC content. The water
vapor transmission rate value tended to be stable at concentration of 5-20%
between 30-40 g/m2hour. Tensile strength and elongation of hydrogels increased
with the addition of CMC and reached the optimal value at 10% concentration of
8,67 N/mm2 and 7,06%. The result showed that the addition of CMC can improve
the characteristic of hydrogel and expected to be used for wound dressing
applications.
