Abstract

The harmful effect caused by Uv could actually be overcome by sun block which could protect our skin from its radiation. One of active substances that could protect human body tissue damaged by free radical of UV radiation was 2-hydroxy-4(octyloxy)benzophenone which could be formulated in a form of cream. The objective of this research was to find out the physical characteristic of sun block cream 2-hydroxy-4(octyloxy)benzophenone as well as to find out its effectiveness which was represented in Sun Protection Factor (SPF) grade. The result of SPF 2-hydroxy-4(octyloxy)benzophenone substance test showed 36.736. It means that 2-hydroxy-4(octyloxy)benzophenone substance had ultra protection value to protect human skin from UV B. The cream formulation was made in 3 concentrations that were concentration 5, 6, and 7%. The test on its physical characteristic showed that the cream which was made had good physical characteristic in organoleptic, homogeneity, stability, pH, viscosity, spread capacity, and its stickiness test. The SPF test on the cream with 2-hydroxy-4 (octyloxy)benzophenone of the concentration 5, 6, and 7% were presented in order as follow 3.462; 3.832; 5.584. Hence, it can be inferred that cream with concentration 5 and 6% had minimal protection ability toward UV B, and cream with concentration 7% had medium protection ability toward UV B.
