Abstract

The aim of the research was to find out the effectiveness of mind mapping to teach descriptive writing at junior high school. The research used experimental method. The population of this research was the eighth grade students on one of the junior high schools in Purbalingga which consists of 224 students. The random sampling was chosen to get the sample of the research. Class 8D was chosen as control class and 8B as experimental class. This research was carried out from February to March 2013. After doing the research, the experimental class had shown the positive changes of students’ achievements. The increase was on the students’ activity using mind mapping and the elements of writing i.e. on the content, organization, vocabulary, grammar and mechanic. After the data had been analyzed, the t-test computation was 4.312, and t-table for df=62 at the level of significance ɑ=0.05 was 1.669. From the previous calculation, the t-test was higher than t-table (4.312>1.669). Based on the pre-test and post-test results, shown that all of the writing aspects had significant difference at ɑ < 0.05. It caused the students to write descriptive paragraph easily based on sequence ideas in mind mapping. Thus, the hypothesis was accepted or it means that mind mapping was effective in teaching English writing particularly descriptive writing.
