Abstract
The aims of the study were to find out the student’s competence in using the Present Tenses and Past Tenses, and to find out the kinds of errors made by the students in using the Present Tenses and Past Tenses. This research was conducted at MTs Negeri 1 Klirong, Kebumen in academic year 2012/2013. The method of this research was descriptive. The writer determined the second grade of MTs Negeri 1 Klirong as population. The total of population was 288 students. The writer took 20% from population randomly. The sample was 50 students. Based on the result, it was revealed that the students’ competence in the use of present tenses was in category fair. It can be seen that the means of students’ competence was 59.5. The students’ competence in the use of past tenses was in category fair. It can be seen that the means of students’ competence was 55.9. The frequency of basic element errors made by students were 25.98% in simple present tense, 24.25% in present continuous tense, 27.71% in simple past tense, and 22.06% in past continuous tense. The errors made by students in using present tenses can be classified into false concept hypothesized and ignorance of rules restriction. The errors made by students in using past tenses can be classified into false concept hypothesized.
