Abstract
The aims of this research are to know yield of cubeb oil’s extraction by
using water as solvent, to know the rate reaction coefficient of cubeb oil’s
extraction, and to know the effect of cubeb’s particles diameter into rate reaction
coefficient of cubeb oil’s extraction..
Volatile oil is feedstock in perfume syntheses, it can be used for traditional
medicine. It has strong effect into human nerve system so it may give certain
psychological effect. Cubeb’s seed is widely used in traditional medicine. In
Indonesia, it was used to reduce bronchitis, dysentery, and stomach diseases.
This research used water distillation method to extract volatile oil from
cubeb’s seed. 25 gram of cubeb together with 500 mL of water are distillated.
Water and certain diameter of cubeb are placed in the closed vessel and heated
for certain times while its vapour must be cooled to change the phase from gasses
into liquid. The research show maximal yield of extraction is 2,544, with 2,5
hours distillation at 5 mm diameter particle. The extraction coefficient for zero
order model are 0,0475 (1 mm) ;0,0042 (2 mm) ; and 0,1284 (5 mm). From data,
rate reaction coefficient (k) zero order for this research is 0,6518. The relation
between particle diameter and k value following equation y = 0.2234x + 0.1245.
where y is rate reaction coefficient (k) and x is particle diameter.
