Abstract

This research is a research refers to the character Abbie Putnam as the only
female character in the drama Desire Under the Elms by Eugene O’Neill. Abbie is
full ambition after her marry with a rich man, named Ephraim Cabot, a widower,
who has three grow up sons, Peter, Simeon and Eben. Abbie has that ambition
because Ephraim has a house very wide land. Her reason upon that ambition is
that because Abbie wants to forget her melancholic past. In this research, the
researcher used the objective approach through structuralism paradigm and must
particularly with Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. This is done since the
research only focuses the data on the work and is in line with the research purpose
that is to know Abbie’s ambition to posses the land and her strategy on getting it
as a symbol of property. The result of research are the first, Abbie Putnam’s is
changing from good to bad, and second is good flatterer character and the last
she’s very ambitious. The results of psychology characters are, id: in order to
forget melancholic past, she wants to posses the land. Ego: for that reason, she
seduces Ephraim and close Eben. Superego: in order to forget melancholic past,
she has instinct to marry Ephraim after she knew that Ephraim rich enough, she
wants to posses the land, letter on in order to reach that she has affair with Eben
and pregnant with him.
