ABSTRACT
AN EFFORT TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ ACTIVENESS IN
READING CLASS USING TEAM GAME TOURNAMENT
(TGT)
(A Classroom Action Research at the Second Grade
Students

SMP N 1
Sumbang in the Academic Year 2011/ 2012)
This research was aimed at improving students’ activeness in reading class
through TGT technique. The objectives of the research were to
describe the
implementation of teaching reading using TGT technique to VIII
grade
students
of SMP N 1 Sumbang and to describe whether TGT technique could improve the
students’ activeness or not. The research was done at SMP N 1 Sumbang in the
academic year
2011/ 2012, especially VIII C class using an action research. The
number of the s
tudents was 34 students consisting
of
20 females and 14 males.
In collecting the data, the writer used observation,
test,
questionnaire,
interview
,
and documentation. In
analyzing the data, the w
riter used some steps;
those were
reducing the data, presenting the data and verifying the data. The result
of the research showed that TGT technique could improve the students’ activeness
in re
ad
ing class. The students accepted an
d enjoyed the implementation of TGT
technique because they could follow well.
The observation result showed that the average of students’ activeness in
Cycle 1 was 22.05 %, and the average of students’ activeness in Cycle 2 was
93.00 %. So, the improvemen
t of students’ activeness was 70.95 %. It
was
supported by the test, questionnaire, and interview result. The result of reading
test showed that the average of students’ comprehension in Cycle 1 was 61.46 %,
and the average of students’ comprehension in C
ycle 2 was 72.05 %. Therefore,
the improvement of students’ reading comprehension from Cycle 1 to Cycle 2 was
10.59 %
.
Then, the questionnaire result showed that the students gave the positive
response toward the reading teaching and learning process using
TGT technique,
it showed that 85.29 % students’ answered was “yes”. The last, from the interview
result most of the students who gave positive response and stated that they felt
happy, enthusiastic, and motivated in teaching
and
learning process.
The resu
lt
had proved that TGT technique could improve students’ activeness in reading
class.
