Abstract

Acne is a skin disease occurred due to chronic inflammation of pilosebaceous follicle marked by comedos, papules, pustules, nodes and cysts in the area of predilection. Acne treatments have caused polemic as well as side effects. Daun dewa (Gynura segetum (Lour.) Merr) contains anti-bacterial active compounds such as alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins and essential oils formulated in ointment preparation with a variety of bases. This research aimed to obtain the physically stable formulations of daun dewa ethanol extract ointment, to determine whether the ointment formulation of daun dewa ethanol extract with variety of bases can meet the physical requirements of the test ointment, and to find out whether ointment formulation of daun dewa ethanol extract with a variety of bases has anti-bacterial activity againts Staphylococcus aureus dan Propionibacterium acne. The extraction were conducted by maceration method. The ointment were formulated in four bases, i.e hydrocarbon, absorption, emulsion, and water soluble. The preparation of ointment was done by dissolution method. Physical properties test of ointment was done by homogeneity test, dispersive potential test, stickiness, and pH test. Anti-bacterial activity test was done by diffussion method. The result showed that daun dewa ethanol extract ointment was physically stable except on the pH that during storage. Only absorption-based ointment meet the requirement dispersive test while only water soluble-based ointment meet the requirement stickiness test. Daun dewa ethanol extract ointments did not have anti-bacterial activity againts S. aureus and P. acne, except on the water soluble-based anti-bacterial activity againts P. acne.
