Abstract

The main purpose of the present study is to find out the impact of the retelling
technique on the students‟ English reading comprehension. This study was
conducted in Madrasah Aliyah Negeri Purwokerto 2. 29 Students were assigned to
the experimental class and 29 students to the control class. Both classes were
taught to the same learning content, however, the experimental class received the
treatment regarding retelling technique and the control class was taught by
conventional technique. The pre-test and the post-test was employed to study
those two classes of second grade high school students as the experimental and the
control classes. 30 multiple choice items for the pre-test and the post-test were
made to measure students‟ reading comprehension ability. The result of the t-test
analysis showed the experimental class who received the retelling technique had a
better performance than the control class who did not receive it. The experimental
class reached the mean score (M) 52.62 in the pre-test and the mean score (M)
67.24 in the post-test. The control class achieved the mean score (M) 52.72 in the
pre-test and 59.03 in the post-test. The result of the t-test was 4.003 with the
degree of freedom 56 was 1.673, so it means the t-value was higher than t-table
(4.003>1.6725). Based on the study result, the study suggests that the retelling
technique can facilitate the students in learning reading comprehension.
