Abstract

Bacground : Acne often occurs in the mid-teens and influenced by various
factors, including genetics, race, season, psychological, hormonal, bacterial
infections and sebaceous gland activity. Acne treatment usually use antibiotics to
inhibit inflammation and kill bacteria, while the long-term use of antibiotics can
lead to resistance in addition also can cause organ damage and immuno
hypersensitivity. Therefore sought an alternative in treating acne by using
ingredients from nature. among the plants that can be used as an acne medication
is to be developed in a bay leaves topical preparations that can facilitate its use in
form of a cream preparation.
Objective : The research aims to make antiacne topical cream formulation
containing extracts of bay leaves which are physically stable, and to know the
antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus
Method : The research were an experimental study to examine the bay leaves
extract with variations of concentration on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus
in cream and then compare the antibacterial activity based on variations of
concentration. All treatment conditions were created equally, to determine the
antibacterial activity.
Result : Bay leaves extract can be formulated in cream that physically stable and
observed by the organoleptic test, pH dan viscosity. In vitro antibacterial activity
of cream bay leaves extract can inhibit the growth of bacteria, proved by the clear
zone in the area around the disc, but no cream formula has activity as well as a
positive control.
Conclusion : Bay leaves extract can be formulated in cream that physically
stable, and preparations cream containing bay leaves extract can inhibit the
growth of Staphylococcus aureus.
