Abstract

The research aimed to improve students’ reading comprehension using cloze procedure. It used a classroom action research, which was conducted at VIII B Students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Cilacap in Academic Year 2011/2012 who were 41 students. It was done in March and April 2012. The research collaborated with English teacher. The classroom action research was carried out based on Kemmis and Mc. Taggart design. This research took two cycles with two actions in each cycle. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. There were two kinds of data collections; qualitative data and quantitative ones. The qualitative data were taken from observation result of teacher’s activity, field notes, and documentation. The quantitative data were taken from test, observation result of students’ activity, and also questionnaire. After analyzing data, it can be concluded that cloze procedure could improve students’ reading comprehension. It is proved by result of students’ reading comprehension improvement at the end of cycle two. The improvement was 21.25% and it reached the indicator of success that was 20%. It was supported by improvement of observation and questionnaire result. The data of observation showed that average of the students’ improvement in reading activities in cycle one was 31.1% and in cycle two was 52.14%. The data from the students’ questionnaire which were gained from the eight questions showed that the students gave positive response to the implementation of cloze procedure in their reading activities. The average of the students’ questionnaire was 84%. Those data proved that cloze procedure could improve the students’ reading comprehension.
