Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the effectiveness of board game
for teaching simple past tense. This research used quasi experimental, the subjects
of the research were class VIII C with the number of the students was 33 as
experimental class and class VIII A with the number of the students was 34 as
control class. Board game was applied in experimental class while control class
was taught by using lecturing method of teaching. Test was used for collecting the
data, namely pre-test and post-test, and the instrument was tried out to part of the
eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Purwokerto which aimed to
know the validity, reliability, and item difficulty of the instrument. The test
consisted of multiple choices items, matching, and gap filling. After getting the
data, it was analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of t-test computation was
higher than t-table. It was 2.581 and the result of t-table at significant level 0.05
with degree of freedom 65 = 1.669. It could be concluded that t-obtained was
higher than t-table ( 2.581 > 1.669). To sum up, board game was effective for
teaching simple past tense at the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1
Purwokerto in academic year 2012/2013. So the hypothesis said that board game
was effective and acceptable.
