Abstract
The aim of the research was to describe out students’ attitude toward learning
reading in SMA N 3 Purwoketo. This research was conducted in SMA N 3
Purwokerto the academic year 2012/2013. The writer took 119 students as sample
randomly. In collecting the data, the writer used questionnaire and interview. From
the data analysis, it was found that the category of the student attitude toward
learning reading was negative attitude. They did not learn the English reading skill
significantly. It means that they learn reading in a halfway. Based on the
questionnaire result, the writer found that there were 83 students in level 40 – 55%, 5
students in level <40%, 26 students in the level 56 – 75% and there were only 8
students in good category. The most of students in SMA N 3 Purwokerto were
included into the negative attitude toward learning reading. From the data analysis,
the students’ attitude toward material was fair (57.04 %). It means that the students
had a standard appreciation toward reading material. There were little students
improving their comprehension. The second was students’ attitude toward learning
process was fair (61.79%). They did not focus to learn the reading material. The
most of them used the time chatting with their friend even though they were sleepy
on reading class. The third, the students’ attitude toward a teacher was fair (62.26
%). The result gave fact that there were only less a half of them to follow the
instruction from teacher. The aspect affective was fair (58.46%). It means that the
students did not interest toward material, learning process and a teacher at reading
class The data result explained that less half of the students felt challenging to solve
the difficulties. The second, the cognitive aspect was fair (65.13%). From the data
result that only some of them used their brain to discuss the text. The third, the
behaviour percentage was fair (57.54%). The most of the students did a little action
to learn the reading English text. They always thought that read the English text as a
big job not habit.
