Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the effectiveness of Hyponym for teaching vocabulary at the first graders of one of Junior High School in Sumbang in academic year 2013/2014. This study was conducted by using quasi experimental. The participants of this study were the first graders of one of Junior High School in Sumbang. There were two classes by which class A was used as the control class and class C was used as the experimental class. Test was used in collecting the data of this study, namely pre-test and post-test. The test consisted of multiple choice items and matching test items. Based on the computation, t-test result was 3.387 and the result of t-table at the significant level 0.05 with the degree of freedom 66 was 1.669. The calculation of t-obtained with t-table was concluded that t-obtained was higher than t-table (3.387 > 1.669). Based on the study result, it is showed that Hyponym was effective for teaching vocabulary at the first graders in one of Junior High School in Sumbang in academic year 2013/2014.
