The study aimed for finding out psychological problem and its causes in
speaking class at the fourth grade of English Education Department at
Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto. The data of the research were
collected from 24 students at the fourth grade of English Education Department at
Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto in May. The questionnaire, interview
and observation were used in collecting the data. The result showed that
there
were
five psychological
factors
that hindered students in speaking English
;
anxiety (79%), self confidence (60%), shyness (58%), fear of making mistakes
(54%), and lack of motivation (4%).
The factors, like anxiety, were commonly
caused by their nervousness and students’ lack
of vocabulary, lack of confidence
caused by students’ inferior and felt inability in speaking English, while shyness
caused by students’ nature as shy persons, fear of making mistakes were caused
by students’ afraid of being laughed by their friends and mo
tivation caused by
students’ personal perception. It concluded that this research showed the
psychological problem and its causes hindered students in speaking class
