The purpose of this research was to improve students’ speaking
participation at class 8 of MTS Negeri Purwokerto Academic year 2011/2012.The
subject of this research was all of the students in class 8 which consisted of 31
students. This research was done from the 6 up to 27 January 2012.
The method of the research was Classroom Action research (CAR). The
writer did collaboration with the English teacher to conduct the research. The
research was done in two cycles and each cycle consisted of 2 actions.There were
two types of data that used by the writer. They were qualitative data and
quantitative data. These two data were used to know the improvement of students’
speaking participation.
The data got from observation result showed the average improvement of
students’ individual contributive participation from cycle 1 to cycle 2 was
44.32%. While in initiative participation, the average improvement from cycle 1
to cycle 2 was 16.13%. Then the average improvement of students’ group
contributive participation from cycle 1 to cycle 2 was 32.85% and the average
improvement of students’ group initiative participation was 14.3%.The data got
from questionnaire showed that from 10 questions there were more 60% students
who states positive response of Talking Chips. Then the data from interview
showed that the students had a good improvement in giving participation in
speaking class.
