Abstract

The aims of the research were to know the biggest errors and the kinds of grammatical errors made by the first grade students of MAN Cilacap in academic year 2011/2012. The research was conducted in MAN Cilacap on June 2012. The subject of this research was the first grade students of MAN Cilacap in academic year 2011/2012. The writer took 20% (50) students from population as sample. Random sampling technique was used to take sample. The writer used an essay writing test to know the grammatical errors made by students in writing recount text. In collecting the data, the writer asked the students to make a paragraph of recount text on the themes given. After collecting the data, the writer analyzed and categorized the data based on surface strategy taxonomy on errors of misformation, omission, misordering, and addition. The data analysis showed that there were 126 grammatical errors. The biggest errors made by the first students of MAN Cilacap in academic year 2011/2012 happened on verb (53 words), to be (29 words), and adjective (22 words). There were 47 or 37.30% of misformation errors, 31 or 24.60% of omission errors, 29 or 23.02% of misordering errors, and 19 or 15.08% of addition errors.
