Abstract

The aim of the research was to find out the effectiveness of English Songs
in teaching Simple Past Tense.
This research used quasi experimental method in which the sample was
not chosen randomly but based on the school policy. Two classes were chosen, XI
TSM 1 as the experimental class and XI TSM 2 as the control class. Pre-test and
post-test were used to find the data. The test was in multiple-choice forms
consisting of 30 items for each test. t-test formula was used to analyze the data.
The result of the research showed that there was a significant difference of
the students‟ ability in mastering Simple Past Tense between the students who
were taught using English songs and those who were taught using English reading
text. It could be seen on the result of computation of t-test, where t-result is 2.47
and t-table was 1.667 at the significant levelα=0.05 in df=74. So, the result is
higher than t-table. It means that the hypothesis was accepted that English Songs
were effective in teaching Simple Past Tense.
