Abstract
This research entitled “Noun Use as Developing Medium of Topic Continuity
among Sentences in Paragraph of Student‟s Trip Report of the Eight Grader Students‟
at SMP Negeri 2 Jatilawang in academic Year of 2013-2014” aimed to describe the
use of the eight grader students‟ at SMP Negeri 2 Jatilawang in Academic Year of
2013-2014”.
It is a descriptive qualitative research. The research data were nouns on the texts
of the students‟ trip report. The data taken the students had field Experience Program
(PPL) from 14 May 2014 to 14 August 2014. The data number was 40 reports. The
process of data collection was done by using reference method with tapping technique
as the basic method, anda noting technique as the advance method. The researcher
used apportion method (metode agih) in the analysis process with insertion technique
(teknik sisip) and subsitution technique (teknik ganti). The data wich had been
collected previously then it was classified to be analyzed. The analysis including six
steps: (1) determining the report (discourse) which would be analyzed, (2)
determining nouns constructing cohesion, (3) determining nouns constructing
coherence, (4) making tables of classification, (5) inserting data into data cards, and
(6) analyzing data according to data classification card.
From the research result, it could be concluded as follow, firstly, the use of noun
relating to grammatical and lexical cohesions as developing medium of topic
continuity. On grammatical cohesion, the researcher found nouns relating to: (1)
reference, (2) subsitution, and (3) ellipsis. On lexical cohesion, she found nouns
relating to: (1) synonymy, (2)hyponym, (3) repetition, (4) collocation, and (5)
equivalence. Secondly, the use of noun relating to coherence as developing medium of
topic continuity included; (1) detail coherence, (2) temporal coherence, and (3)
„perian‟ coherence.
