Abstract

This research is aimed at improving students’ vocabulary through songs at fourth grade of SD Negri 04 Mereng Warungpring Pemalang in academic year 2011/2012 The research was done in SDN 04 Mereng Warungpring Pemalang at fourth grade in the academic year 2011/2012 as the subject of research. It was done for five weeks in November until January 2012. The problem faced by students they were forget the meaning of word, they could not pronounce the English word well, they were unconfident, shy and doubt to ask questions. The writer use Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the method of the research. To perform of the research, the writer worked collaboratively with English teacher. The CAR was done based on Kemmis and Mc Taggart model design. The data were collected through observation, interview, questionnaire and test which were given in the last action in each cycle. There were two kinds of data, qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data was analyzing through interview result and analyzing the classroom action. The quantitative data were obtained by counting the students’ vocabulary score (post test), the result of students’ questionnaire and the percentage of students observations checklist. The data analyze proved that the songs could improve students’ vocabulary from 57.8% in pre-test, 64.6% in post-test cycle one and 81% in post-test cycle two. Through the observation, it could be seen that the students more active and interest in learning English especially in vocabulary after the teacher gave the songs in teaching vocabulary. Based on the interview result of questionnaire showed that more than half students (95%) gave positive response to the implementation of the songs. Based on the research result, songs could be use to improve students’ vocabulary.
