Abstract

The aims of the research were: 1) to identify types of sentence fragments are made
by students in writing a report text, 2) to know the frequency of each sentence
fragment type made by students in writing a report text, 3) to know the highest
frequency sentence fragment type made by students in writing a report text. This
research used descriptive quantitative method by describing the subject of the
research in the present time based on the reliable and factual data. The population
of the study was the eleventh grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah Ayah in
academic year 2014/2015. The result of the research showed that the eleventh
grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah Ayah in academic year 2014/2015 fell
into fair categories in their skill in writing report texts namely, the writer found
there were three types of sentence fragments in report texts, they were sentence
fragments containing no clause at all, sentence fragments containing a verbal but
still no clause, and sentence fragments containing a subordinate clause but no
main clause. The number of all sentence fragments was 78. The sentence
fragments type with the highest frequency in writing report text was sentence
fragments containing no clause at all with 40 sentence fragments (51.28%). The
sentence fragment type with the second highest frequency was sentence fragments
containing a verbal but still no clause and with 21 sentence fragments (26.92%).
The sentence fragments type with the lowest frequency in writing report text was
sentence fragments containing a subordinate clause but no main clause with 17
sentence fragments (21.80%).
