This study aimed to determine the kinds of social criticism contained in
monolog script of Ratna Sarumpaet's Marsinah Menggugat. The object of research
was social criticism. The approach used was sociological approach. This research used
descriptive analytical method. The research data were in the form of text containing
social criticism. The data source was the monologue text of Ratna Sarumpaet's
Marsinah Menggugat. Reading and Noting were used as data collecting technique.
This study used qualitative descriptive analysis techniques. The stages of the research
were started by (1) reading the whole monologue script of Ratna Sarumpaet's
Marsinah Menggugat, (2) classifying data related to social criticism, (3) displaying the
results of the data relating to social criticism with textual evidence concerning social
criticism, (4) concluding the results of data analysis related to social criticism. The
results of this study indicated that there were social criticism issues in the monolog
script of Ratna Sarumpaet's Marsinah Menggugat including: (1) social criticism on
government issue which include political issues in maintaining poverty for specific
interests and the eviction of an area by using military intervention to expedite the
eviction. (2) Social criticism on the economic problems covering the problem of
poverty experienced by Marsinah that led to school dropping out. (3) Social criticism
on the problem of power including the issue of legal injustice on law enforcement of
the endless Marsinah homicide case and oppression experienced by the labors
(Marsinah comrades), who were forced to sign a letter of dismissal under the threat of
arms. (4) social criticism on the issue of human rights including the right to life of
Marsinah seized by particular parties and the issue of slavery experienced by
Marsinah and her associates as well as their well-being.
