Abstract

Papaya seeds (Carica papaya L.) are reported to contain compounds which act as
an anti-bacterial activity. The previous research on the formulation of papaya
seeds extract facial wash proved to be effective to Propionibacterium acnes (P.
acnes) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria. The objective of this
research is to find out the effectiveness of papaya seeds extract facial wash
towards P. acnes and Staphlococcus epidermidis (S.epidermidis) bacteria and to
determine Lethal Dose50 (LD50) value in order to set the dose level. This research
use experimental method on the anti-bacterial activity test in facial wash by
variant of extract concentration in different formula. This research is also use nonexperimental
method which is used in acute toxicity dermal. The result shows that
there is anti-bacterial capability from the extract on P. acnes dan S. Epidermidis
bacteria. Then, the researcher performed acute toxicity dermal test using Wistar
white rat which was tested at the dose of 50, 200, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg of weight
(W). The highest dose do not cause toxicity symptom on the skin until 14 days of
observation. It can be concluded that the extract and formula of papaya seeds
facial wash have an anti-bacterial activity to P. acnes and S. epidermidis, and it
does not cause toxicity symptom on skin and does not cause death to a maximum
dose (2000mg/kg W).
