Abstract

This research aimed to describe the spatial abilities of students in the material of
geometry especially prism and pyramid for eighth grade students of State Junior
High School 8 Purwokerto based on learning styles. The kind of this research was
descriptive-qualitative research. This research used purposive sampling technique to
take sample. The subject in this research was students of class VIII C. This
research’s subject was divided into three groups according to spatial abilities, namely
students’ visual learning style, students’ auditory learning style, and students’
kinesthetic learning style. The instrument used to collect data was questionnaire
about the students’ learning styles mentioned above, spatial ability test, interview and
documentation. The results of this research showed: (1) Students’ visual learning
style has been able to master aspects of spatial perception, thought rotation, spatial
orientation and be able to identify and classify geometrical patterns which have been
shifted, but they are still weak in the aspects of spatial relationships and constructing
geometrical shapes which have been shifted. (2) The students’ auditory learning style
has been able to master aspects of auditory spatial orientation and construct
geometrical shapes which have been shifted, but they are still weak in mastering
aspects of spatial perception, thought rotation, spatial relations and identifying and
classifying geometrical patterns which have been shifted. (3) Students’ kinesthetic
learning style has been able to master aspects of spatial perception, visual spatial, and
spatial orientation, but they are weak in the aspects of thought and spatial rotation.
