The aim of this research was to know the criteria of a good article title. This
research was carried in April 2014 until June 2014. The total sample of this research was
409 titles taken from The Jakarta Post issued on May 22, 2014 – June 22, 2014 from five
categories, namely headlines, national, archipelago, opinion, and sports. To get the
sample, it was used random sampling and it was analyzed by using content analysis. In
content analysis, it was used some classifications to classify the data. In this research,
the data was classified based on the length of the title and the form of the title. Based
on the result, it was found that the shortest title was written in two words while the
longest one was written in thirteen words. The title written in six words had the
percentage of the most, namely 29,58% while the title which had the percentage of the
least was the title written in twelve words and thirteen words. Moreover, most of the
titles were written in the form of positive sentence, namely 47,68% from the whole
article titles analyzed. It was followed by phrase – formed title having percentage
47,43%, imperative – formed title 1,95%, interrogative – formed title 1,71% and
negative – formed title 1,22%.
