Abstract

This research aimed at investigating code switching of teacher talk in
English classes at SMP N 3 Purwokerto. This research was conducted by
using the descriptive method. The participants of the research were four
English teacher of SMPN 3 Purwokerto. In this research, the data source was
from observation and interview. Observation results collected when the
teacher was teaching in her/his classroom. Then, interview results collected
after the teacher had finished her/his class. The researcher used observation to
get the answers of when and how long the teacher used code switching. The
researcher used interview to get the answers of when the teacher used code
switching. The researcher used audio recording to know the length of using
code switching. The researcher found 186 utterances which contained code
switching used by the teachers which were in 10 situations. Those were 70
utterances in command, 42 utterances in explanation, 42 utterances in
question, 7 utterances in compliment, 7 utterances in warning, 5 utterances in
encouragement, 5 utterances in suggestion, 3 utterances in giving information,
3 utterances in clarification, and 2 utterances in motivation. From the
observation results using audio recording, it can be concluded from three
times of observations, the average of the used code switching by teacher 2
(T2) was 81 seconds, teacher 1 (T1) was 77 seconds, teacher 4 (T4) was 63
seconds, teacher 3 (T3) was 53 seconds.
