Abstract

This research was titled ―Directive Speech Act on Novel Discourse of a Novel
titled Hafalan Shalat Delisa written by Tere Liye‖ it aimed to describe the forms of
directive speech act on the characters dialogue of the novel.
Type of this research was descriptive qualitative research. The data were the
formal data which were speech containing directive speech act. This research was
done in three phases. The first phase was data provision. The phase included three
activities: (a) data collection by noting, (b) data selection and verification by removing
unnecessary parts, and (c) data arrangement based on the types. The method was
observation method with noting technique as the advanced technique. The second
phase was data analysis by using orthographic matching method which was in writing
form as its determining data. The third phase was presentation of data analysis which
was presented informally.
The research result showed that the directive speech on the novel were in six
forms. They are 1) requestives speech which were 35 (which included 12 asking
speeches, 1 panhandling speech, 12 begging speeches, 4 squeezing speeches, 3
praying speeches, 2 inviting speeches, and 1 boosting speech), 2) question speech
which were 120 speeches including (98 questioning speeches and 22 interrogative
speeches), 3) requirement speech which were 61 speeches including (14 reigning
speeches, 12 wishing speeches, 5 commanding speeches, 11 demanding speeches, 1
dictating speeches, 5 directing speeches, 4 instructing speeches, 5 arranging speeches,
and 4 snitching speeches), 4) prohibitive speech were 8 included (5 forbidding
speeches and 3 limiting speeches), 5) permissive speeches were 11 including (3
agreeing speeches, 1 authorizing speech, 3 bestowing speeches, 2 acceding speeches,
1 permitting speech, and 1 allowing speech), and 6) advisory speech which were 34
including (10 advising speeches, 9 warning speeches, 4 counseling speeches, 3
purposing speeches, 7 suggesting speeches, and 1 boosting speech).
