Abstract

The study was aimed at describing the students' mathematical abstraction ability on
the material of vector in grade X MAN 2 Purwokerto viewed from their Intellectual
Quotient (IQ). The study was descriptive qualitative study. The subjects were the
students of grade X MIA 1. The students were divided into three groups, such as
smart normal IQ, normal IQ, and under normal IQ. There were 3 respondents of
smart normal IQ, 3 respondents of normal IQ, and 3 respondents of under normal IQ.
The data were collected by doing test, interview, and documentation. The results
revealed that: (1) the students with smart normal IQ were able to identify the
characteristics of mathematical object by doing direct observation, able to find out
the mathematical concept of an object, able to change the mathematical problem to
athematical model, and able to do manipulation, but they are poor enough to make
generalization, (2) the students with normal IQ were able to identify the
characteristics of mathematical object by doing direct observation, able to make
generalization, able to find out the mathematical concept, but they were poor enough
to do manipulation, and (3) the students with under normal IQ were able to identify
the characteristics of mathematical object by doing direct observation, able to make
generalization, able to find out mathematical concept, and able to change the
problem into mathematical model, but they were poor enough in doing manipulation.
