Abstract

This aim of this research is to find out the effectiveness of portfolio assessment for teaching writing. This research was conducted at second semester of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto in the Academic Year 2016/2017. This research used quasi experimental. The subjects of this research were 2A as experimental class and 2B as control class. Portfolio assessment was implemented to the experimental class while the control class was taught by non portfolio assessment. Test was used to collect the data. The tests used were pre-test and post-test which were in the form of essay test. T-test formula was used to analyze the data. The result showed that students‟ ability of the experimental class was higher than the control class. It could be seen at the t-test computation, where the t-test result was (2.691) and the t-table was (2.013) in degree of freedom 46 at the significant level 0.05. The result was higher than t-table (2.691>2.013). It means that the hypothesis stated that portfolio assessment is affective for teaching writing.
