Abstract

This research was aimed to find out students hindrance factors. Based on researcher experience in university organization especially in department level, a lot of students were not brave to speak English in public. It made the researcher curious and decided to conduct a research. This research involved 80 students as sample from 109 students as population to respond 25 statements of questionnaire and 12 students as sample to answer 10 interview questions. The data were calculated using descriptive statistic and categorized into 5 level of hindrance factors. The result of the analysis showed that generally students had problems in their motivation to speak English. While specifically, the students have problems in speaking English especially in 4 the most affecting factors related to (a) the status of speaking partner (86.3%), (b) understanding toward the materials (83.8%), (c) unfair appreciation from the lecturers (81.3%), and (d) inappropriate time, place, and also situation (81.3%).
