Abstract

The aim of the research was to find out the students‟ mastery level and students‟ problems of auxiliary verbs. The fourth semester of English Department of UMP in academic year 2016/2017 was chosen as the population which consisted of one hundred students. Moreover, 50% of population (50 students) were chosen as a sample. Descriptive method was used as the method in this with the test as a main instrument in collecting the data. After analysing the data, the writer comes to the conclusion that the students‟ mastery in auxiliary verbs of the fourth semester students belong to fair category since the mean was 59%. The percentage of students‟ mastery who belong in very good were 4% or 2 students, good category were 38% or 19 students, and fair category were 52% or 26 students, as well as in bad category were 6% or 3 students. The percentage of students‟ mastery in each type of auxiliary verbs was 77% in auxiliary do, 68% in auxiliary be and 55% in auxiliary have. The lowest percentage was modal auxiliary with 48%.
