Abstract

This research was carried out to investigate students’ anxiety of English learning process and their strategies to overcome the anxiety. This research was conducted in one of public Junior High School in Banyumas with 71 students as the sample of research. This research used descriptive survey method. The data were collected through classroom observation, questionnaire, and students’ interview. The result of the research showed that almost all students had anxiety problem in English learning process. The causes of anxiety were they felt nervous, unconfident, and heart beat when they spoke English. They did not know what they should speak in English. This is because they did not have sufficient comprehension of English structure and not enough vocabulary banks. Other thing which becomes the cause of students’ anxiety is their fear when the teacher asked them in English. To cope with the problem, every student has his/her own strategies. Most of the students tried to find out the meaning of English words covered in the teacher’s questions. Interestingly, they also tried to work cooperatively with their classmates sat next to them or behind to find out the answer and gain their support as well.
