Abstract

The aim of this research was to find what proper attitude and what academic achievement of the students that could be rewarded and what types of reward system that the teacher at Muhammadiyah Junior High School of Purwokerto usually used. This research used survey research. The subjects of this research were 4 teachers in Muhammadiyah Junior High School of Purwokerto. There are 3 schools of Muhammadiyah Junior High School, each school has 2 English teachers but two of them never give reward when they teach their students, so the writer only took 4 teachers as a subject research. The data was collected used interview and observation. Interview was conducted before observation and direct observation was conducted to gain depth information. After collected the data, the data was analyzed and the stage of analyze the data was the writer reduce the data then display it, and the last stage is draw conclusion. The result shown that English teacher in Muhammadiyah Junior High Scholl gave reward to the students when they could try to answer teacher’s questions whether it is correct or incorrect and also when they got highest score in the class. Meanwhile the types of reward that the teacher usually used during teaching and learning process were verbal reward, tangible reward, token reward, and score reward. The type was given according with the attitude or academic achievement of the students. When the students answer the teacher’s question wrong the teacher gave verbal reward for the students but when they answer it right the teacher gave score or token reward. The teacher also gave tangible reward when the students got highest score in the class. Reward can affect student’s motivation in learning process but used wrong reward will make negative affect for the students and also the students become distracted.
