Abstract
Through reading someone could develop various skills for reaching life
success and could improve their living better. Students usually read what they
like, that fact showed that teaching reading needed more attention from the
teacher. It was teacher’s duty to ensure that reading learning process became a fun
habit for students. Teacher should have understanding to the students, learning
design, and learning implementation, including developed teaching material that
could help students actualized various potentials they have.
The objective of this research were: (1) to know the need of teaching
material in reading learning that would become a learning development, (2) to
draw the teachingdesign of Big Book materialbased on local culture, (3) to obtain
the validation draw of teaching material of big book based on local culture in
learning reading comprehension.
This research was a development research level one where the researcher
did it for knowing the potency and problem, for designing product and for
examining that product internally.
The results of the research were as followed. First, from the previous study
found problem about teacher’s and students’ need that related with learning
material of reading comprehension in elementary school, that were: (a) students
and teacher needed choice ofvarious teaching reading material and the contents
was easy to be understood whether the vocabulary’s choice and the sentences’
structure, (b) the physical material teaching was interesting, including of the font
size, pictures’ illustration, and the good packaging quality from the material
quality or the bind, (c) the content of story brought, it was different from the story
that teacher common used in the learning activity. The second, the validation
prototype result of developed teachingmaterial also obtained positive response
from the expert validator: (a) the feasibility of the conthent reached 3,80 score, (b)
the material content of the story reached 3,88 score, (c) the graphic aspect reached
3,80 score, (d) the quality of material/ paper reached 4,00 score, and (e) the
printing reached 4,00 score. From those five aspects belonged in to category very
good. The scoring response from the teacher: (a) the feasibility content reached
3,51 score belonged in to category very good, (b) the material content of the story
reached 3,37 score belonged in to category good, (c) the graphic aspect reached
3,34 score belonged in to category good.
