Abstract

This research was aimed at improving the students’ participation in learning English through drilling technique. This research used a classroom action research (CAR). The researcher used Kemmis and Mc. Taggart design. There were 2 cycles in this research and in each cycle the researcher did 2 actions. The subject of this research was the students of VII F class in SMPN Kedungbanteng in the academic year 2011/2012. There were 28 students. The object of this research was the drilling technique that used in every action. The data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaire and photograph. This research applied greeting and introducing in cycle I, and adjective, the day in cycle 2. In analyzing the qualitative data the researcher used the result of observation list, interview, and to analyze the quantitative data the researcher had seen the students’ speaking participation in learning English by calculating the percentage of the students’ activity. The result of the study showed that the use of drilling technique could improve the students’ participation in English teaching learning process. It can be seen from the result of students’ involvement, there was improvement from pre condition to cycle 1(10.96%) and from cycle 1 to cycle 2 (48.13%). It was also supported by observation, interview and questionnaire result. Most of the students participated actively in the learning process.
