Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the effectiveness of SQ3R technique in teaching reading at the Second Grade of SMP Negeri 1 Purwojati. This research used experimental method which was done at the Second Grade of SMP N 1 Purwojati. The research was carried out from 14th January until 19th January 2013. These were two classes as the sample class. In the experimental class, the writer gave treatment in teaching reading class using SQ3R as the technique, and in the control class used conventional method. The research used pre-test and post-test to collect the data. Having given the treatment, the writer gave post-test to both classes. Then, the writer analyzed the data by using t-test formula. After data had been analyzed, it was found that there were positive effects of teaching reading using of SQ3R. It was supported by the post-test result of the experimental class. It showed that the students’ reading ability increased. Then the writer consulted the result of the t-test to t-table and the result of computation which t-test is higher than t-table that is 2.5>1.672. It means that SQ3R technique is effective to teach reading.
