Abstract
This research was aimed at knowing the students’ mastery and errors in using of Simple Past Tense at the eighth grade students of MTs Ma’arif Sikampuh Kroya in academic year 2011/2012. This research was conducted on 10 – 11 October 2011 at the eighth grade students of MTs Ma’arif Sikampuh Kroya consisting of 104 students. To determine the sample, the reseacher used random sampling technique. The total number of the sample was 42 respondents. This research was descriptive. In collecting the data, the reseacher used test as an instrument. Having analyzed the data, the reseacher found that the percentage of the mean of students’ mastery of Simple Past Tense was 40%. It belonged to bad category. Based on the analysis result, the reseacher classified two factors of error into false concept hypothized and over – generalization. The error of false concept hypothized is caused by most of students have wrong concept in simple past tense rule. Meanwhile, in over – generalization lots of students created one deviant of verb in simple past tense.
