Abstract

Currently, concrete block becomes very popular as red brick substitute. On the other
hand, problem of industrial waste occurs as the consequence of development of technology,
inovation as well as alternative experiments. One of the cases was Mandiri Jaya Store; it
produced gypsum and resulted wastes around 20 kgs per-day. It potentially resulted
environmental polution. The gypsum wastes from Mandiri Jaya Store was phosphogypsum
that left over as it was, without any attempt to recycle it. Concrete technology development
recently enriched with additives material experiments that positively contribute to the
improvement on concrete quality. The objectives of this research was to utilize gypsum waste
as concrete additives material for concrete block production. The research used concrete
block of 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm as the material tester. The gypsum wastes additive divided
into four variants based on percentage to cement weight as follow: 10%, 25%, 50%, dan
75%. Each variant made into three samples with comparison of cement weight and fine
aggregate weight as 1Pc : 8Ps. Treatment method of the tester material would be done by the
28th day of concrete block age. This research found that the compressive strength of 10%
gypsum wastes addition was 2.39 MPa, while the compressive strength of 25% gypsum
wastes addition was 2.2 Mpa. Based on quality requirements of SNI (Indonesian National
Standard) 03-0349-1989 both variants are categorized as compressive strength IV with
average point between 25 – 21 kgs/cm2. While the 50% and 75% gypsum wastes
addition was out of strength criteria.
