Abstract

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of students‟ anxiety in writing and find out the types as well as the reasons of their anxiety. The subjects of this study were second semester students of English Education Department. This study employed a survey study. The data were collected from three instruments, namely: observation, questionnaire and interview. The researcher modified the questionnaire from Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) by Cheng. For analysing the data, the researcher applied quantitative and qualitative data analysis. The result showed that there was anxiety among the students appeared from 10 symptoms. While the dominant type of writing anxiety was cognitive anxiety with 37.4 % followed by somatic anxiety with 32.3 % and the last was avoidance behaviour with 30.3 %. In addition, this study also found some factors that caused anxiety in each type. The causes of cognitive anxiety were fear of attending a test and lack of vocabulary and grammar acquisitions. Low of writing skill, writing under time constraint and language difficulties were the source of somatic anxiety. Meanwhile, the reasons of getting avoidance behaviour among students were vocabulary and grammar acquisitions, and negative evaluation.
