Abstract

This survey study conducted was aimed at finding out the level and types of motivation as well as investigating the reason of motivation among English Education Department students. In this study, a modified questionnaire from Gardner’s Attitude/Motivation Test Battery was employed as primary data collection technique and an interview was done as secondary data collection technique. Data obtained from both data collection techniques were analyzed with different ways namely descriptive statistics for questionnaire and qualitative data analysis technique for interview. The questionnaire findings revealed that majority of English Education Department students had high degree motivation in learning English. Meanwhile, Instrumental motivation was more predominantly possessed by students compared to integrative motivation. The percentages of both were representatively 80.1% (68 students) for Instrumental and 77.5% (32 students) for Integrative. Regarding to the reasons of motivation, instrumentally motivated students were dominant in getting future job/career since well paid job requires well English mastery. On the other hands, the dominant reason among integratively motivated students was English preference. They learned English because they really like its language and wanted to achieve good proficiency in English.
