Abstract
The increasing use of plastics in our daily lives cause environmental pollution. Hard
synthetic plastic degraded by nature so it takes them environmentally friendly plastics
are made from starch. In this research, biodegradable plastics from corn starch with
sorbitol as plasticizer was synthesized. The purpose of this research are to determine
the effect of sorbitol on morphological structure, mechanical properties, bioplastic
resistance to EM4 and burial in the soil. Bioplastics are made from starch-distilled 1:5
added and acetic acid of 2 ml. Whereas the effect of sorbitol tested by adding to the
solution of 0 ml, 5 ml, 10 ml, 15 ml and 20 ml. The structure of morphology
increasingly smooth as sorbitol increase. The bioplastic mechanical properties are
characterized by tensile strength, elongation and modulus young test and
biodegradation tests performed using EM4 and burial in the soil. From result of
research result of tensile strength test 2,56 MPa, for elongation 30,58% and 2,42 MPa
for modulus young. The biodegradation test of EM4 showed that bioplastics were
heavily degraded by 62.40% for three days and most of the bioplastics had been
decomposed in the soil for seven days.
