Abstract

This study aimed to describe the figurative language of the soccer commentator in the final match of AFF Suzuki Cup 2016.
This research was a qualitative descriptive research. The data used in this research was 251 utterances of football commentator's speech in the final match of AFF Suzuki Cup 2016 containg figurative languages. Secondary data sources in this study were taken from the AFF Suzuki Cup 2016 final match that had been downloaded from youtube. Primary data source was taken from the AFF Suzuki Cup final match aired on RCTI TV station. Research method in this research was conducted through three stages of research as follows. (1) Method and technique of data presentation used was scrutinize method with tapping technique and advanced technique of noting. (2) Method and technique of data analyzing by using equivalent and distributional method. The determining tools are facts pointed or referenced by language or referent language by using the basic techniques of the determinant-sorting technique and advanced correlation of the equalizing technique (HBS). (3) The method of data presentation was using informal method.
The results on figurative language analysis of football commentaries in the final match of AFF Suzuki Cup 2016 had found four kinds of figurative as follows. (1) The figurative languages based on the choice of words consisted of two kinds of informal language and language style of conversation. (2) The language based on the tone was found in three kinds: simple style, noble force, and medium style. (3) The language based on the structure of sentence was found as much as two kinds of climax and repetition. (4) The language based on the directness of meaning was as follows. (A) The rhetorical language was found in three styles of polysyndeton, euphemism, and hyperbole. (B) The figurative language found consisted of seven kinds, namely similes, metaphors, personifications, allusions, epithets, synecdoche, and irony.
