Abstract
The Regional Archive Office and Library of Banyumas is an official institution having an important role in the management of library materials and is responsible for the archives in Banyumas regency. This institution is an interesting institution because it is related to the education and historical resources management through archives in Banyumas. This research aimed to: 1) study the history of Regional Archieve and Library of Banyumas; 2) study the development of service system and good facilities either physically or non-physically in the office; 3) explain the role of Regional Archieve and Library of Banyumas to the society, especially for education. The benefits of this research is to increase the researcher's knowledge and insight about the history and role of government institutions which has important role for society; it provides reference and information to the readers especially those who will do further researches about government institutions. Historical research method was used in this research and it had 4 stages which were: heuristic, criticism or verification, interpretation, and historiography. The results of this research are: the history of Regional Archieve and Library development from the beginning to present either physically or non-physically was presented, the role of Regional archieve and Library in improving the society's quality of life through its field which is library and archives by increasing the interest of reading and literacy movement, assistance of society reading park, management and assistance of preservation and establishment for archive-aware society
