Abstract

This research aimed to describe students’ mathematical representation ability and self-efficacy. The research subjects were the students of grade VIII (class A) in SMP Negeri 1 Bukateja. The samples were chosen through purposive sampling. The studens were grouped into three groups, i.e. high, medium, and low groups. The data were collected through test, questionnaire, and interview. The obtained result revealed that the high group was able to meet all indicators of mathematical representation ability, i.e representing data into symbol or geometrical picture, creating mathematical model and using a written text for solving problems; the medium group was able to meet all indicators of mathematical representation ability, i.e representing data into symbol or geometrical picture, creating mathematical model and using a written text for solving problems; the low group has not been able to meet all indicator of representation ability in which some students have not been able to represent data as a symbol or geometrical picture, creating mathematical model and some students have not been able to use a written text for solving problems. The high and medium group self-efficacy have met all indicators of each dimension of self-efficacy, the low group self-efficacy only met one indicator of streght dimension and one indicator of generality dimension.
