Abstract

This research studied about three types of motivation namely instrumental, integrative, and personal and also three components of attitude namely affective, behavioral, and cognitive which determined the students‟ success in learning English. This research used descriptive survey design in which the researcher tried to describe the phenomenon existing in the society. The goal of the research was to find out Pharmacy students‟ motivation and attitude towards English. A questionnaire as survey instrument was used for collecting the data. To get deeper information, this research also used semi-structured interview to some respondents. Simple random sampling technique was used to take the sample of the research in which the researcher did not pay any attention in the stratification that existed in the population. The sample of this study consisted 60 students of Pharmacy department of second and fourth semester. The study showed that Pharmacy students highly motivated by instrumental motivation with mean score 4.22 and then followed by personal and integrative motivation with mean score 4.15 and 3.99. Pharmacy students also had favorable attitudes by looking at the mean score of affective, behavioral, and cognitive component with 3.26, 3.33, and 3.68 of each. All of them belonged to good category. By looking at the mean score of motivation and attitude, it will be possible for Pharmacy students to succeed in learning English.
