Abstract

This study aimed to analyze students' errors in solving story problems on the topic of rectangular based on Newman Error Analysis (NEA). It was conducted in grade VII C of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbang. The data were analysed through descriptive qualitative analysis. The research participants were divided into three groups using learning style questionnaire developed by Bandler and Grinder, i.e. students with visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning style. The research instruments were questionnaires, tests, interviews, observations, and documentation. The research validity was tested through triangulation technique, i.e. by comparing the students' test and interview result. The results indicated that: 1) students with visual learning styles experience errors in the stage of reading the question, transformation, process skill, and inferencing. 2) students with auditory learning style experience misconceptions about the questions, transformation, process skills, and inferencing. 3) students with kinesthetic learning styles experience errors at all stages, i.e. reading the questions, understanding the questions, transformation, process skills and inferencing.
