Abstract

This research objectives were to find out the students’ reading habits, investigate students’ preferences toward the genre of reading text and the reasons of their preferences. The data were collected through modified questionnaire and interview. The subject of this study was grade 8 students of State Junior High School 2 of Purwokerto. The questionnaires were distributed to 292 students. To get deeper information, a semi-structured interview was conducted to 30 students as representative. Based on the data analysis, it showed that 77.5% students categorized as good reading habits. They spent their time for reading more than an hour everyday. Most of them read by their own eagerness without coercion from others such as parents, teacher, siblings, and friends. Only few students needed some motivation from others. The students read for some purposes, i.e. for improving their knowledge, for obtaining information and for pleasure. Afterwards, almost all students more enjoy reading fiction. The genres that students preferred the most were adventure, romance, fantasy, and humour. The reasons of their preferences were the stories were amusing, interesting, and pleasing for them.
