Abstract

his research was aimed to find out whether Paraphrase Strategy improved students‟ activeness in reading class. The research was carried out at SMA Belik 1 in the academic year of 20 14/201 5. The research method used a classroom action research. The writer took 31 students as the subject of the research. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation, questionnaire, interview, and documentation. In analyzing the data, the writer used some steps, namely ; reduc ing the data, presenting the data, and verifying the data. Based on the result of inferential analysis of the data, there are some conclusions that can be drawn. Paraphrase strategy was able to improve students‟ comprehension in reading class . The students ‟ score showed the total average of students‟ comprehension in Cycle 1 was 65,48 %, and the total average of students‟ comprehension in Cycle 2 was 75,32 %. Thus , the improvement of students‟ comprehension was 52,60 %. The questionnaire result showed 9 5,53 % of the students answer „yes‟. Based on the observation and questionnaire result, it meant the teaching reading through Paraphrase Strategy could improve students‟ comprehension in reading class.
