Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the effectiveness of draw label caption
strategy (DLCS) for teaching writing descriptive text at the eight grade students of
SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Purwokerto in academic year 2014/2015. This research
used quasi experimental research. The participants of this research were the eight
grade students in SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Purwokerto. The two classes were
chosen as the experimental class (VIII A) consisting of thirty students, and the
control class (VIII B) consisting of thirty students. The technique of data
collection used test namely pre-test and post-test. The result of assessment showed
that the mean score of pre-test in the experimental class was 53.2 and the mean
score of post-test was 69.37. Meanwhile, the mean score of the control class was
50.15 and the mean score of po
st-test was 61.25. The improvement from pre-test
to post-test was 16.17 in the experimental class. The progress in the control class
was 11.1. The data was calculated by statistical formula. The t-test result was
3.054 while the t-table with the significant level 0.05 in
d.f
58 was 1.6751. Based
on the data analysis, t-test was higher than t-table or 3.054
1.6751, so that the
hypothesis was accepted. It proves that DLCS gave positive effect for teaching
writing descriptive text.
